Yes, I will probably go see Dr. Atomic, but I am not a big fan of contemporary opera, b/c everything has already been done for the most part, and opera composers today have two choices: make their opera atonal or without arias and that negates the major reason people love opera, or make very melodious, beautiful operas which is reactionary and not adding anything new to the opera canon! LOL Basically, opera composers are screwed. They are in a no win situation.....either make beautiful music and the masses will love it, but the critics will hate it and they have not created "art," or do something avant garde (new) and that will be art, but then NO opera lover will want to hear it b/c it doesn't make you swoon! I feel sorry for them. It is easier to compose movie music, pop music, even avant garde music that is not opera.....but opera is supposed to engulf us with pleasurable emotion.
Anyway, I will probably try to attend most HD transmissions this year, if I can (if nothing conflicts). I love opera, but Wagner was a sadist, so I have not gone to many of his operas (I like Italian bel canto opera anyway), b/c Wagnerian operas are like 5 hours long. I feared going to Tristan und Isolde, but I was able to watch it lying down eating popcorn at the movie theatre when the Met transmitted it this past year! LOL My opera buddies were aghast. At one of the HD transmissions some guy yelled at an old guy, "Sir, you're chewing popcorn with your mouth open. Close your lips!" I laughed at that. Don't mess with opera lovers!!!
I think when my sister died I needed something "beautiful" in my life, and I returned to Innsbruck, Austria and started going to the opera and fell in love. I was depressed and really didn't care if I lived or died to tell you the truth. Opera was the only thing that helped me get through her death. It gave voice to my pain (most opera characters are going through pain and screaming about it), and it helped me "feel" again, b/c I was numb. Ever since I got into opera no other type of singing does it for me. I don't know ANY pop acts except Madonna and Brittany Spears only b/c they are in the news so much, and I knew Madonna before I got into opera. Any new pop/rock, etc. star I know nothing about. Give me Renee Fleming, Anna Netrebko, Angela Gheorghiu, Natalie Dessay, and Deborah Voigt over any pop singer!!!! My non-opera friends think I am elitist, and I tell them, "No! Opera was originally for the masses....it is all about sex, love, cheating, etc. Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte is about swapping husbands!!!"

Nara, you made me laugh about writing actual letters! I forgot about letter writing!!! I am doing well, although I flew to New Mexico on Tuesday and returned today. My grandmother is dying, and I visited her and my aunt and cousins who live there. It was tiring and sad but one cousin I had not seen since I was a child. So there was some happiness. Yes, I do see the HD events in movie theatres and plan to go to the Renee Fleming gala on Monday night in a movie theatre. I have seen her at the Met in Rusalka, Il Pirata, and La Traviata. Plus, I've seen her in concert and recital. Wonderful voice, but she can be campy at times. All my vacations center around opera now whether it is NY, Chicago, San Francisco, L.A., or Europe. What is it that you do now? How is the Met one of your clients? I just got back from New Mexico tonight and am exhausted so not thinking coherently.

Angst? Teenagers? Not us. I always thought you were happy, so even back then I couldn't read women very well... No wonder my daughters think I'm clueless....
As for ND, well, in the course of trying to better my career, this is where I had an opportunity to run a newspaper, so.....

Hi Nara. It's been a long time. My email is mrentzer@verizon.net
I'm pretty leery of social networking sites myself, but I couldn't resist this one! But I know exactly what you mean. I'm on facebook now too, so I've gotten all kinds of crazy! I also hate posting my picture, but I figure if anyone's memory has gotten as bad as mine, I need to. Can you email me at elebedeker@gmail.com? I'd love to catch up with you as well. Just downloaded Bowie on my phone yesterday.... I think of you when I hear anything from the U2 War album.
